Using Butterfly Wings For New solar Collector Design

Solar Cells On a Butterfly Wing

solar panel news and factsOver the past year scientists in China and Japan have used the natural solar collectors in the wings of butterflies as a way to improve on original designs.

Over the past year and a half, scientists have been trying to find new materials that will improve light-harvesting in dye-sensitized solar cells. As of now, the dye-sensitized solar cells have the best light conversion percentage ,at 10%.buuuutttteeeerrrrffflllyyyyy

But after discovering that a butterfly wing – or the solar cells on it – the Japanese and Chinese scientists used the butterfly wing , and made a mold out of it.

And they took the mold and made copies of the butterflies solar collectors. After that they will transferred the light harvesting structures to the solar cells.

Because the fabrication process is so similar – they are now looking into creating more commercially viable products. Its just goes to show that Mother Nature is ALWAYS a step ahead of us – leading us into new frontiers and new technology too.
